Gujarat with its long and exciting history has a variety of interesting destinations - Lothal, Ahmedabad, Vadodra, Palitana and the Gir National Park - the last retreat of the Asiatic Lion.

 

AHMEDABAD

Despite the fact that it is a busy textile town, Ahmedabad has a certain charm. In the old city, the superb artistic and aesthic traditions of Gujarat are visible in its beautiful mosques, Jain temples, unique stone wells that descend in elaborately decorated levels into the earth and in old houses with their ornately carved wooden balconies and screens. Modern Ahmedabad has fine structures - designed by renowned architects like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn.

Teen Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Sidi Sayyed Mosque, Sidi Bashir Mosque, Rani Rupmati, Rani Sipria and Ahmed Shah’s Mosque, Hathee Singh Temple, Calico Museum of Textiles, Kite Museum, Shreya Museum of Folk Art, Vechaar Utensils Museum, Sabarmati Ashram.

Around Ahmedabad Adalej Vav (19Kms), Sarkej (8Kms). Around Ahmedabad are the remains of the 4500 year old port at Lothal (80Kms); the fine Sun Temple at Modhera (106Kms) and Patan (120Kms), a centre for Patola silk saris, which is noted for its fine Jain temples.

Ahmedabad is well connected by rail, air and road to most parts of the country.

 

VADODARA

Once capital of a princely state, Vadodara is noted as a centre for the arts and has interesting museums and art galleries.

PALITANA

863 Jain Temples built in translucent white marble are located on Shatrunjay Hill. Palitana is an important pilgrimage for all Jains. The historic town of Junagarh; the Sasan Gir National Park, the last bastion of the Asiatic lions and the magnificent Somnath Temple, near veraval, are the other places of interest around Palitana.

Palitana is just 215Kms by road from Ahmedabad.

 

AHMEDPUR MANDVI

The Samudra Beach Resort here has recreated and environ that is flamboyantly ethnic, with thatched huts and quaint swings. An ideal spot for water sports, Ahmedpur Mandvi is close to the island of Diu.
