The land of he five rivers, Punjab, the centre of the Sikh faith, is known for its agricultural wealth and its rugged, handsome people. Amritsar, the holy city of the Sikhs, the royal cities of Patiala and Kaputhala and other little places of pilgrimage all set amidst the lush fields of wheat and mustard, make an attractive circuit, not far from Delhi.

 

AMRITSAR

Amritsar, the "pool of nectar" is named after the scared tank near the holiest of Sikh shrines, the Golden Temple - founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Ram Das.

JALANDHAR

A modern industrial city noted for being the centre of the sports good industry, Jalandhar has a number of intresting monuments.

LUDHIANA

The city is known as the main centre of the woollen texile industry in India.

 

KAPURTHALA

Once a princely state, Kapurhala is located 18Kms from Jalandhar.

A Mosque designed in the Moorish style by a French architect and the Panch Mandir - a Hindu Temple built by a Sikh.

 

PATIALA

Patiala, also capital of a princely Sikh state, has fine gardens and places.

ANANDPUR SAHIB

Located on the banks of the River Sutlej, is Anandpur Sahib, an important place of pilgrimage. It was here that Guru Gobind Singh baptised the first five members of the Sikh faith known as the Panch Pyaras.

All these places are connected by rail and road and are within easy reach of Delhi and Amritsar.
